FAQ about xda developer
Q1 : What is the ROM or Firmware?
A1 : ROM or Firmware is software that contains the operating system that runs on our mobile phones. In this case is the Google Android Eclair version 2.1, Froyo version 2.2 and version 2.3 Gingerbread
Q2 : Can I update my firmware SGS without having to service center?
A2 : Yes. For ordinary users, the official software upgrade from Samsung can be done with PC application software from Samsung called KIES. For SGS purchased in Southeast Asia region, the original firmware that came with the SGS time of purchase is DXJF4 version which now has a firmware update to version DXJG4.
For users with more knowledge in terms of flashing the firmware can use an application called Odin which currently version is 3.0. Firmware file itself can be downloaded from the Internet or from www.samsung-firmwares.com
Firmware which used is free from the region in the sense that we can install the firmware from another region (Europe, America, Africa and others) with the risk we will lose settings or special application in force in Your region
Q3 : I have downloaded the firmware files from the internet. Why the file is differents?
A3 : In general, SGS firmware file is divided into 3files with suffix. tar or. md5. To distinguish it are:
Firmware PDA => This file usually has an inscription CODE or PDA in the name of the file.The size is big enough that is about 200MB. This file contains the Google Android operating system and applications are brought.
Example:
CODE_I9000XWJM5.tar.md5
AP_S1_PDA_DXJF4_CL363024.tar
I9000XXJP3-REV3-PDA-mid-CL470734.tar
RADIO Firmware => These files usually have PHONE or MODEM paper on the name of file.This file serves to regulate the working of wireless chipsets such as Wifi, Bluetooth and GSM. Radio firmware is already adapted to regional conditionsor the state that issued this firmware. Therefore the use firmware from another region can cause abnormalities when used with our simcard like wasteful batteries and so forth.
This is reasonable because the RADIO ROM from another region is not specified for use in the service of our country.
RADIO file size is usually around 12 MB.
Example:
MODEM_I9000XXJM3.tar.md5
I9000XXJP3.tar
MODEM_I9000XXJM1.tar
CSC Firmware => This file contains country-specific code / application / APN settings that may vary between regions / countries. Using CSC file from another region may cause us to lose the APN settings automatically or application that is only reserved for our country. On the contrary we may find applications that may not be able to run in the service of our country.
CSC file sizes will vary from about 12 MB to 81MB and has the paper of CSC in the name of the file.
Example:
CSC_I9000XXJM1.tar
CSC-I9000SERJM1.tar.md5
GT-i9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJP3.tar
Q4 : Can I mix up firmware PDA / MODEM / CSCfrom different firmware?
A4 : Yes. We can mix these three files in trying toget the most appropriate combination such as a PDA from JM2, RADIO from JGJP8 and CSC from DXJF4.
But you can not mix the different firmware versions between Eclair and Froyo.
Q5 : How do I check the firmware that is on mySGS?
A5 : Go to Phone and then type *#1234# then the screen will be displayed SGS third firmware version (PDA, Modem, CSC). Do not be shocked or surprised if the firmware version may be different from each other even when flashing /firmware updates we only use 1 version of firmware.
Q6 : What is the meaning DXJF4, XXJP3 and so forth?
A6 : SGS firmware file always begins with the i9000, or GT-i9000 hardware code as a bookmark. Both characters then pointed to the Country Code.
Example:
DX: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore,Vietnam
XX: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary,Italy, Spain, United Kingdom
JP: Arabic
JW: West Africa
The next character indicates the year of the launching of the firmware.
Example:
I = 2009
J = 2010
The next character indicates month of launching of the firmware.
Example:
A = January
B = February
C = March
and so on.
The last character is a number that indicates the version.
Example:
1 = version 1
2 = version 2 as the successor to version 1
3 = version 3 as the successor of version 2
For more information please come here.
Q7 : I tried the new firmware but why I can't connect to the modem WCDMA/3G? What'swrong?
A7 : Probably caused by RADIO and CSC files that do not support operations in the band WCDMA/3G. Another possibility is that the APN settings that do not exist or does not match so it must be done manually via the menu Settings -Wireless and Networks - Mobile Networks -Access Point Names and press the button and select New APN settings. Next we were asked to fill the parameter settings that conformed to our service.
Q8 : How do I reset our SGS?
A8 : There are several ways to do the reset.
Soft reset is done by pressing and holding the power button to restart the SGS.
Hard reset is done by way of entry into the RECOVERY menu by pressing and holding down the VOLUME UP + HOME + POWER until the splash screen logo of S and release the third key.
We will find a menu with four options, that is:
1. Reboot
2. Apply sdcard: update.zip
3. Wipe data / factory reset. Its function is to restore our SGS to the initial configuration of the firmware that our install along with all kinds of updates that are made via Apply update.zip.
4. Wipe Cache Partition. The point is to clear the cache partition. In some such situations can not download the application via the market, the internet browser so slow and we should do the Wipe Cache Partition in order to fix the problem.
It is believed that to get the most out of firmware is installed then before and after installing the firmware to the SGS, our recommended to wipe the cache partition that followed wipe data / factory reset.
Q9 : I have been using CSC files corresponding to regions of Southeast Asia / Indonesia. But why not come out the APN settings?
A9 : You must do the CSC format by going to the phone and pressing the *#272*HHMM# where HHMM is the time indicated SGS now include this code in the form of 24h.
An example is when entering the code, which is shown at the SGS is at 9.15 tonight then we input the code is *#272*2115 #.
Then we can select the country code and the corresponding operator. Please see the links above on the A6 for the Country Code.
Q10 : What is the root / rooting?
A10 : Root is the user account on Linux (Android was developed based on Linux) that have all access. Root user can edit anything in the system. For security reasons, a normal user does not have all the access in the system. When our do the rooting in SGS then our will get access to read and write in the system which had not previously owned and our also possible to run some commands in Terminal.
Tutorial for rooting SGS is in below post.
Q11 : Where is I can get drivers for Windows 7 / Vistax64 for SGS so can be read on a PC?
A11 : Please go here
Q12 : I have just installed the firmware and now I can not download a protected application from Market. How to fix this problem?
A12 : To fix this problem, your SGS must be rooted and some users claim that the application "Eris Market Fix" that are downloaded from Market can fix this problem.
Q13 : My SGS was not able to lock the GPS satellites. Is there a solution to this problem?
A13 : From the few reports mentioned that the firmware XWJM1 and XWJM2 can solve this problem and also the firmware has a GPS location readings are more consistent and accurate. Nevertheless, the results still depend on GPS readings from the location where we are.
Currently there is no perfect solution to solve the problem of GPS in firmware before XWJM1 and some experimental results from various forums to solve this problem remains negative.
Q14 : I want to install the new firmware but I want to have a backup of original firmware for a while I can go back to the early firmware.
A14 : Currently, there is no way to backup the firmware without root access. There is an application that is ROM Manager (can be downloaded from the Market), which can back up the firmware but this application requires root access.
Q15 : Can I disable access to 2G?
A15 : At Froyo 2.2.1 press the power button, then select a data network.
Q16 : I feel lagging or long loading time when switching the screen or activate the application. What is the problem?
A16 : SGS uses SD to save internal data cache. At present, it is estimated that this problem is caused by the code I/O is not good and can be improved illegally by the developers.
can be improved by replacing the standard kernel with custom kernel
Q17 : The process of installing the firmware that I did was fail. SGS Now I can not reboot at all. Does SGS I still can be saved?
A 17 : Do not worry. Most cases of bricked still be saved. All you need do is:
a. Remove the USB cable
b. Remove the battery SGS
c. Close Odin
d. Open Odin and prepare again.
e. Replace the batteries SGS and go to download mode
f. Replace the USB cable
g. When Odin had to recognize the COM port which is used. then click Start.
Q18 : Can I install the Indonesian language in the firmware which not from the region of Southeast Asia?
A18 : We can not.
Q19 : Is there a secret code in the SGS?
A19 : There is. Please come here.
Q20 : What is the file. pit?
A20 : The file. pit contains information about the partition of the internal ROM and used when installing the firmware. Currently there are 2 types of file. pit there are 512.pit and 513.pit.
Both have different information about the large size of the partition and now mostly works with file 512.pit ROM. But the initial firmware including DXJF4 must use 513.pit file. New firmware file as XWJG5 not work with file 513.pit.
File. pit serves to change the internal partitions in Odin ROM if we check the option "repartition".
Q21 : Which firmware is best for the SGS?
A21 : They are similar. There is no best. But of course the latest firmware fixes from previous firmware.
Q22 : I often read word of Internal and External SD SD. What it is?
A22 : In the SGS. 8GB/16GB internal memory storage is often referred to as Internal SD and micro SD Card enhancements we put the external SD Card.
Q24: am I need App2SD?
A24: No need to App2SD in SGS. SGS 1.8GB of internal memory is very large for allowing us to install many applications in the SGS.
Q25 : If the SGS is rooted or replaced the firmware to another region, is warranty expired?
A25 : warranty does not expire, with the terms when brought to the service center unroot first, and when changing firmware to another region, re-flash the original firmware to the region ...
